Knœringue (German Knöringen , Alsatian Knehrige ) is a French commune with 381 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse , the canton of Saint-Louis and the municipality of Saint-Louis Agglomération .
geography
The municipality of Knœringue is located in Sundgau , around 30 kilometers from Mulhouse . The Thalbach , a right tributary of the Ill, flows through Knœringue .
Neighboring communities of Knœringue are Berentzwiller in the north, Ranspach-le-Haut in the northeast, Michelbach-le-Haut in the east, Muespach-le-Haut in the south and Muespach in the southwest and west.
history
Tools, including an ax, were found during archaeological excavations. Probably around 58 BC there was A battle between Folgensbourg and Knœringue. The village was probably founded by the Alemanni , as the place name ends with -ingen . In 1090 the village was called Cnoringen , and in 1289 there was already a village community according to documents. In August 1445 the village was destroyed and in 1634 it was affected by the Thirty Years War . In 1648 immigrants came mainly from Switzerland . It has belonged to the canton of Huningue since 1790 . Even the Second World War did not leave Knœringue unaffected. On November 20, 1944, the village was liberated by the French army.
