Wentzwiller (Alsatian Wanzwiller , German Wenzweiler ) is a French commune with 756 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to Arrondissement of Mulhouse and is a member of the Association of Municipalities Saint-Louis Agglomération .
geography
The municipality of Wentzwiller is located in the valley of the Muehlbach (also known as Munchenbach ) in the southeastern Sundgau . Although the Basel city center is only six kilometers away, Wentzwiller is in a quiet location away from the national traffic flows. Wentzwiller borders on the neighboring communities of Attenschwiller , Buschwiller , Hagenthal-le-Bas , Folgensbourg and Michelbach-le-Haut .
history
The village was first mentioned in 1144 as Werneswire in a deed of ownership of the Michelbach monastery signed by Pope Lucius II . The place probably already existed at the end of the 6th or beginning of the 7th century. The name is derived from the Latin "villare" ( village ) and an owner named Wend or Wendo .
In the Middle Ages, the village was part of the county of Pfirt , which came to the Habsburgs in 1324 . Wentzwiller belonged as a fiefdom to a family of the lower local nobility, in the 16th century to the Truchseß of Rheinfelden , then to the Lords of Rotberg until the French Revolution .
As is common in Sundgau, many monasteries (especially those from nearby Basel) owned land and rights in and around Wentzwiller.
At the beginning of the 19th century, two grain mills are documented in Wentzwiller (upper and lower mill), none of which have survived today. The upper mill was located in rue des Prés 1. It ceased operations after the First World War. At 14 rue de Buschwiller was the lower mill, which was blown up in 1940 during the retreat of the French army.
At the beginning of the Second World War, the residents of Wentzwillers were evacuated to the Landes department in southwestern France .
In 1958 the drinking water supply system was created, which was developed together with the neighboring communities of Buschwiller and Folgensbourg . Sources west of Wentzwiller are used.

Attractions
The parish church with its half-timbered bell tower is dedicated to St. Martin and its shape is unique in the region. It was built in 1765 (after Prof. Paul Stintzi 1762). In the 1980s, the church was fundamentally renovated with the support of the community.
- Chapel of the Three Virgins
A way of the cross with 14 stations leads today through the Lange Holz , the forest between Wentzwiller and Folgensbourg , to the “Aux trois Vierges” (the three virgins) - a shrine with a gable roof with a small bell. The shrine consists of three tombs, a statue of the Virgin Mary and a Christ cross. According to legend, the three virgins lived as hermits in the forest and were murdered by an unknown person. The pilgrimage site was built in its current form in 1955 and renovated in 1988. In 1998 a paved footpath to the chapel was built.
Regular events
The village festival ( Heilafascht ) takes place on the penultimate Sunday in August.
Economy and Infrastructure
As in most of the villages in the border region, the number of farmers decreased dramatically. Twelve farms are still located in the community (growing grain and vegetables, dairy farming, breeding horses, sheep and goats). Most of the residents are commuters today. Around 60% of them work in Basel , another part in Saint-Louis , Huningue and Hésingue as well as at Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport .
Of the 478 hectares of municipal area, 296 hectares are arable land and grassland, 90 hectares are forest, 41 hectares are built-up areas and 44 hectares are on a golf course.
In the village itself there are small craft businesses (carpentry, kitchen equipment, heating and plumbing, chimney sweeps) and a guesthouse.
Wentzwiller has a kindergarten and is a primary school location.
- Transport links
Wentzwiller is connected to the Basel conurbation via Buschwiller and Hésingue or Hégenheim . The trunk road D 419 from Basel to Belfort touches the north of the municipality of Wentzwiller.
