Hégenheim ( German originally Hegenheim , Alsatian Hageme or Hägeme ) is a French commune with 3420 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Mulhouse and the canton of Saint-Louis .
geography
The municipality of Hégenheim is located on the south-eastern edge of the Sundgau , on the border with Switzerland , around four kilometers west of Basel city center. By the municipality flowing Lertzbach (on Swiss territory Lörzbach called).
Neighboring communities of Hégenheim are Hésingue in the north, Saint-Louis in the northeast, Allschwil (Switzerland) and Basel in the southeast, Hagenthal-le-Bas in the southwest and Buschwiller in the west.
Jewish cemetery and synagogue
The Jewish cemetery in Hégenheim was built in 1673 and served as a burial place for the Jews of the diocese of Basel . Until August 1903, when the Basel Jewish Cemetery was opened, the members of the Basel Israelite Congregation were buried in Hégenheim.
The Hégenheim synagogue was built in 1821. From 1874 it served as a Jewish retirement home. Today the house is in an advanced state of disrepair.
