Allschwil (in local dialect [ ˈalʒ̊ˌʋiːl ]) is a political municipality in the Arlesheim district of the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft .

geography

Historic aerial photo by Walter Mittelholzer from 1925

Geographically and historically, Allschwil belongs to the Sundgau . The municipality is located on the southwestern edge of the city of Basel and is surrounded on two sides by France . The neighboring towns are next to the city of Basel the three basel scenic communities Schönbuch , Oberwil and Binningen , as well as the French municipalities Neuwiller , Buschwiller , Hégenheim and Saint-Louis . Allschwil is the northernmost municipality in the canton of Basel-Land. The area is 8.92 km², of which 42% are settlements, 31% are agricultural zones and 27% are forests.

Due to its location in the countryside and its proximity to the city of Basel, Allschwil is one of the popular places to live in the Basel area near the city. It is located at the confluence of two streams ( Lützelbach and Mülibach ), which unite at the village square to form the Dorfbach ( Bachgraben ).

coat of arms

On a blue background the golden key crossed with the silver sword as a symbol of the two saints Peter and Paul , the patrons of the village church. In official letters, the coat of arms has largely given way to a controversial logo .

history

Finds from the Stone , Bronze and Roman Ages bear witness to a long history of settlements in the municipality. The village is first mentioned in documents as Almswilre in 1033. The place name is composed of an Old High German personal name, possibly Alaman or Almar / Almer , and the term -wīlāri , which is common among the Alamanni to designate new court settlements . The alternative old name for Allschwil is "Schwellheim", although this expression is not a very old name. Around 1950 the term "Schwelleme" was also used.

In Franconian times, Allschwil belonged to the Duchy of Alsace and came to the Duchy of Basel in 1004 as part of the Birseck rule . In 1525, the city of Basel temporarily concluded an umbrella contract with Allschwil, which introduced the Reformation by 1595 . The village was sacked by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War in 1634 and from 1792 was for a time part of the French departments of Mont-Terrible and Haut-Rhin . After the principality of Basel was broken up, Allschwil was added to the canton of Basel at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Allschwil belonged to the canton of Basel until the cantons were split into the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft in 1832.

economy

Numerous smaller companies are based in Allschwil, as the location of the municipality is very favorable and the tax burden is relatively low. Allschwil is close to the border (close to the EU ) and also benefits from the center of the city of Basel . These include many so-called “start-up companies” in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biological industries. These have come together in Allschwil to form the so-called Innovation Center Northwestern Switzerland. These include companies such as Actelion , Abbott , Polyphor , MDL Information Systems , Idorsia Pharmaceuticals and many more. Allschwil is the headquarters of the largest Swiss solar technology company, Tritec , which also operates on the international market with its subsidiaries.

politics

The community is organized as follows:

The executive consists of the seven departments of Central Services - Presidiales (Municipal Council) , Taxes and Finances , Social Services and Health , Building Construction and Spatial Planning , Education, Upbringing and Culture , Civil Engineering and Environment, and Resident Services and Security . The members are elected every four years according to the majority procedure by the residents. Nicole Nüssli-Kaiser has been the mayor since 2013.

The legislature is elected for four years by the residents according to the proportional representation procedure . The graphic shows the distribution of seats after the election on February 9, 2020.

In addition to the community of residents, Allschwil has a community in which all local residents are organized. It is presided over by a five-member citizens' council elected by the local citizens in a majority vote. As a rule, citizens' community assemblies take place twice a year, at which the naturalizations are also carried out. All local citizens who are entitled to vote are entitled to apply at the community assembly.

In the 2019 Swiss parliamentary elections, the share of the vote in Allschwil was: SP 25.6%, SVP 20.0%, Greens 17.0%, FDP 16.9%, CVP 9.9%, glp 6.0%, EPP 3, 3%, BDP 1.2%.

population

Evangelical Reformed Christ Church

With over 20,000 inhabitants, Allschwil is the most populous municipality in the canton of Basel-Landschaft . The proportion of foreigners is 23.8%. 27.7% of the population are Roman Catholic and 24.7% are Reformed .

Leisure and culture

As in the entire Basel region, Carnival is firmly anchored in the population in Allschwil . The Allschwil Carnival is one of the larger and more well-known Carnival celebrations in the region, alongside the Basel Carnival . Another cultural institution is the Allschwil local history museum.

In Allschwil there are numerous clubs that help shape leisure time. In addition to the Bachgraben outdoor pool, there is also an indoor pool. Due to its proximity to neighboring France , you can also take trips to nearby Alsace . The neighboring municipality of Basel can also be reached quickly and thus take advantage of the city's offers.

For children and young people there is not only the youth recreation center and the Robi playground, but also the youth land .

There is also a bicycle garden near the canton's border, where children can learn to cycle under realistic conditions such as traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, right of way, etc.

traffic

Allschwil has one tram line and four bus lines. With the tram line 6 to Riehen of the BVB you can reach the city of Basel within 15 minutes . The “Morgartenring” tram stop is the first stop on this tram line in the canton of Basel-Stadt. The following bus lines also exist:

  • BVB line 33 from Schönenbuch via Allschwil to Basel / Schifflände
  • BVB line 48 to Basel SBB train station runs during the day from Monday to Saturday
  • Line 38 BVB / RVL to Wyhlen Siedlung in Germany
  • BLT line 61 to Basel / Neuweilerstrasse- Binningen - Oberwil
  • Line 64 of BLT to Arlesheim

Allschwil is also very easy to reach by car. With the opening of the Basel Nordtangente in 2008, Allschwil is also connected to the motorway network. Due to the shuttle traffic to the city of Basel but also to France, traffic is relatively dense at certain times; contributes to the fact that no public transport is offered from France to Allschwil. The community also has a large number of bicycle lanes. Allschwil is close to Basel-Mulhouse Airport , which can be reached very quickly. However, due to the airport, the community suffers more and more from aircraft noise .

Since December 2014, Allschwil has had a direct connection to Basel SBB train station from Monday to Saturday via line 48 , but the line does not go to the village center, but to the industrial district of Bachgraben.

There are also plans for an Allschwil / Morgartenring S-Bahn station.
