North bypass (Basel)

The Nordtangente is an urban motorway in Basel and part of Autobahn 3 . It connects the Swiss Autobahn 2 with the French A 35 .

The section of the north tangent branches off from the A2 on the Erlenmatt area north of the Badischer Bahnhof Basel and runs westwards over the two- story Dreirosenbrücke . An underground tunnel runs on the west side under the Voltaplatz, which runs north to France and there at the border crossing Saint-Louis / Basel-St. Johann joins the A35.

After around 50 years of planning and construction history, the north bypass was opened for private transport in mid-2007. The last junctions were opened in 2008.

The construction costs of the 3.2 km long route amounted to around 1.55 billion Swiss francs . The north bypass is thus the most expensive stretch of road in Switzerland that has ever been built. The high costs are due to the predominantly underground route (87% of the route) and the crossing of the Rhine.

Originally, four ventilation towers were planned for the north tangent tunnel, only one of which was built in 1995. The ventilation shafts had become unnecessary due to the lower pollutant levels of the diesel vehicles, and the fans in the completed 50 meter high and CHF 3.5 million expensive concrete tower were never put into operation and were finally removed again. Its demolition should enable noise protection measures.

Some residents expressed criticism of the redesign of the surface of the north bypass.
