St. Johann (emphasis on the last syllable [ saŋgt jɔˈhanː ], called Santihans in Basel German ) is a district of the Swiss city of Basel . It is located in the heavily industrialized north of the city. The Rhine port of St. Johann and the municipal waste incineration were located there. The quarter has a high proportion of foreign residents and is one of the social hot spots in Basel. The proximity to the Rhine and the city nevertheless enable a high quality of life.

The St. Johann district borders France in the north, the Rhine in the east, the Basel-Vorstädte , St. Johanns-Park and Am Ring (St. Johanns-Ring) districts in the south and the Iselin district (Burgfelderstrasse ) in the west ).

The St. Johanns-Quartier owes its name to the Order of St. John, who had had a branch here since 1206 (a «coming»). Today nothing can be found of the branch of the order.
