Am Ring , called Ring-Gwartier ("Ring-Quartier") in Basel German , is a district of the Swiss city of Basel . It is located to the west of Grossbasel city center and borders in the north on the St. Johann district (St. Johanns-Ring), in the east on the suburbs (Johanniter-, Schanzen-, Klingelberg- and Schönbeinstrasse, Schützen- and Steinengraben, Heuwaage Viaduct ) , in the south to the districts of St. Alban (Elisabethenanlage) and Gundeldingen (station area) and in the west to the districts of Bachletten (Steinenring, Viaduktstrasse ), Gotthelf and Iselin (Spalenring).
The Am Ring district was built in the 1860s . The main streets of the district (Steinenring, Spalenring, St. Johanns-Ring) form a ring-shaped frame around the inner parts of the city, which gives it its name. The houses were built for the middle class and are mostly two to three-story row houses with manorial facades for several families.
From socio-economic perspective, it is together with the Bachletten-quarters jokingly as Bläächdalbe or Alumyyniumdalbe ( "sheet metal St. Alban ", "aluminum-St. Alban") means, and therefore counted among the more upscale parts of town.
