Matthäus , called Mattys in Basel German , is a district of the city of Basel . It is located in Kleinbasel on the banks of the Rhine and borders in the south on the Clara-Quartier (Sperrstrasse) and the Kleinbasel old town (Klingentalgraben), in the north on the Klybeck-Quartier (Dreirosenstrasse, Horburgstrasse), in the east on the Rosental-Quartier (Riehenring).
The Matthäus-Quartier is named after the Matthäuskirche in the center of the district; this church, built in 1896 , takes its name from the apostle Matthew . Almost all of the district was built between 1890 and 1900 for the people of Kleinbasel active in industry .
Together with the Klybeck district, it forms the lower Kleinbasel, which is jokingly referred to as Bierflaschegellert ( beer bottle cellar; the "Gellert" is a wealthy district in the St. Alban district ).
Residential districts
Matthew is divided into four residential areas:
- Bläsi (Bläsi system, St. Matthew's Church)
- Dreirosen (Dreirosenanlage, Breisacherstrasse)
- Flora (Erasmusplatz, Unterer Rheinweg)
- Haltingerstrasse (Klybeckstrasse, Riehenring)
