The old town of Grossbasel is a district of the Swiss city of Basel and describes the part of the old town on the left bank of the Rhine . Together with the old town of Kleinbasel , it forms the historical center of the city.
The district boundary runs exactly along the former city wall from the year 1200 and in its square you will find most of the historical buildings such as the Basel City Hall and Basel Minster as well as archaeological sites from Roman times .
The old town of Grossbasel is only adjacent to one other district, namely the suburbs (Petersgraben, Leonhardsgraben, Kohlenberg, Steinenberg, St. Alban-Graben). With the Mittlere Brücke and the Basel ferries it is also connected to its counterpart, the old town of Kleinbasel, on the other side of the Rhine .
