The Basel Minster Treasure was the cathedral treasure of the Basel Minster that was created over 500 years . In the Middle Ages, Basel was the seat of the diocese of Basel , the cathedral of which, as the diocese's main church, possessed an extraordinary and rich church treasure with the cathedral treasure.

history

The history of the collection can be traced back to the consecration of Heinrichsmünster in 1019. The ensemble of reliquaries , monstrances and crosses grew over the course of five centuries . The church treasure survived the destruction of the iconoclasm of 1529 undamaged and was then kept for around 300 years in the minster's sacristy .

It was not until the canton of Basel split into the half-cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft in 1833 that the treasure tore apart. On November 25, 1833, the arbitration tribunal of the Swiss Federal Diet decided that the church treasury should be divided in the ratio 36 percent (Basel-Stadt) to 64 percent (Basel-Landschaft). Since the half-canton of Basel-Landschaft urgently needed money, he auctioned his share of the treasure in 1836, which was then scattered all over the world.

Today many of these valuable reliquaries and liturgical implements are in collections of various museums such as the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin, the British Museum in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musée national du MoyenÂge in Paris. With one exception (the cross in the Clarakirche ) , the pieces that remained in Basel or were bought back are on display in the Historical Museum .
