history

around 1835

As early as 1100 there was an industrial estate in place of the Barfüsserkirche and was one of the four cores of the valley town, the center of the city of Basel. In 1256 the Franciscan mendicant order , also known as “Barfüsser” in German-speaking countries, built its monastery on the square, and that's how the square got its name. After the earthquake of 1356 , the cloister forecourt served as a market place for a few years. For centuries, wood and coal were traded on the Barfi, and pigs were traded, and this gave the place the nickname Seibi (= sow, pig place), which is still used today. After the Reformation , the wall surrounding the former monastery was torn down and the square was enlarged. From 1758 it appeared as a real market and exhibition center.

The Barfüsser Church on Barfüsserplatz

The appearance of the Barfi changed markedly in 1821 when various monastery buildings including the adjacent city wall and their towers were torn down, the square opened up towards the Steinenvorstadt and the society house, today's city casino , was built.

From 1883 on, the Seibi was also used for wholesaling of vegetables and fruit. In 1929, however, it was moved to the newly opened market hall at Basel SBB train station .

On the evening of 10 August 1927 a bomb exploded in a telephone booth in the waiting hall of the tram shed at Barfüsserplatz, the usher and another person died, 14 people were injured. The waiting hall, telephone booths and the station office were destroyed, the demolished tram booth had to be completely demolished. The case is considered unsolved.

In 1936 the square was partially lowered. He was provided with a retaining wall against the Barfüsserkirche, which was nicknamed the Western Wall . In 1979 the wall was replaced by a large flight of stairs .

A street crosses the square as a connection between the Steinenberg and Kohlenberg with the Falknerstrasse. From the lowering in 1936 to the demolition of the “Wailing Wall” in 1979, Barfüsserplatz was used as a car parking lot. With the remodeling in 1979, the parking lot was canceled.

In the next few years the place should have changed its face a little again. A project drawn up by the Zaha Hadid London office to replace the old city casino with a new one was rejected in a referendum on June 17, 2007.
