Schifflände (Basel)
The Schifflände is the oldest port facility in the city of Basel and a square in Grossbasler's old town . The ship's guild, founded in 1354, had its headquarters there. The square is to the left of the Rhine near the Middle Bridge . The Rheintor stood there as part of the Basel city wall , which was probably built in 1225/26 on behalf of Bishop Heinrich von Thun . After a vote in the Grand Council , the gate was torn down on the occasion of the dismantling of the city wall in February 1839, and it had recently proven to be a traffic obstacle.
The Hotel Les Trois Rois and a station of the Basler Passenger Shipping Company are located by the ship landing. Since May 6, 1895, the square has been served by the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB). The “Schifflände” tram and bus stop is a junction in the BVB network and is also distributed across Eisengasse, Marktgasse and Spiegelgasse.
