Basel passenger shipping
The Basel Passenger Shipping Company Ltd. (BPG) is a Swiss public company and operates from March to October Regular cruises and year-round excursions and bus rides (charter) on the Rhine at Basel .
history
The company was founded in 1924 in the form of a cooperative . The initiator was the engineer Rudolf Gelpke (1873–1940), who had campaigned for passenger shipping on the Upper and High Rhine all his life . After a short time, however, fierce competition broke out with the Basler Schifffahrt-Aktiengesellschaft (BRAG) , founded in 1927 , which was able to offer cheaper fares thanks to ships built more cheaply in Germany . In 1928 the BPG was liquidated and the BRAG was the only one to operate passenger traffic. In 1968 BRAG was sold to a foreign company ( SHV ) and passenger transport was outsourced. The Basler Personenschifffahrts-Gesellschaft was immediately re-established in the form of a stock corporation. Today, the shares in Basler Personenschifffahrt AG are 100% owned by the canton of Basel-Stadt.
Route network
The main network extends from Basel up to Rheinfelden and down the Rhine to Huningue (France). On request, trips down the Rhine to Breisach and through the Canal du Rhône au Rhin (German: Rhine-Rhône Canal ) to Mulhouse are possible. The BPG offers scheduled lock trips as well as tours in Basel (lunch boat with lunch and commented city and harbor tours), adventure tours (tours with culinary and sometimes entertainment options) and extra tours (boat rentals).

The BPG owns four ships. The fleet consists of:
- Motor ship Rhystärn , the flagship of BPG with a capacity of 600 people (260 outside seats on the panorama deck )
