Schönenbuch ( Basel German : Schönebuech ) is a municipality in the Arlesheim district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland .
geography
Schönenbuch is located in the Sundgau at 355 m above sea level. M. and is the second smallest municipality in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The village is enclosed on three sides by France (communes of Neuwiller and Hagenthal-le-Bas). Only in the northeast does it have a connection to the Allschwil municipality in Basel . The area of the municipality is 136 hectares, of which 71% is agricultural area, 27% is settlements and 2% is forest.
history
Schönenbuch was first mentioned in a document in 1315. The Alemannic hamlet was named after a nearby beech wood. In the Middle Ages, the St. Klara Monastery in Schönenbuch in Basel owned a farm, which repeatedly changed hands and in the 17th century fell to the Solothurn estate . Since Schönenbuch was always under the sovereignty of the Bishop of Basel , it shared the fate of the Episcopal Bailiwick of Birseck : part of the Raurachian Republic in 1792, French in 1793, Basler from 1815 and part of the canton of Baselland from 1832/33. Schönenbuch was ecclesiastically connected with Hagenthal until 1781 and with Allschwil from 1781 and owned a chapel. In 1825 it got its own church and in 1837 its own pastor. In 1862 Schönenbuch became an independent parish. Thanks to its proximity to the city of Basel, Schönenbuch has developed from a farming village into a popular place to live since the Second World War.
coat of arms
Silver background and inside a red beech tree on a green three-mountain. The beech stands for the community name -buch (e) and the Dreiberg indicates the altitude of the village. However, the official coat of arms was not introduced until 1945. The flag is white and red.
population
39% of the population are Roman Catholic, 32% are Reformed. The proportion of foreigners is 8.4%.
economy
A lot of agriculture is still practiced in the community. The farmers of Schönenbuch cultivated a large part of their fields on Alsace soil and, with the appropriate permit (duty-free pass), carry the fruit across the border into Switzerland. The largest employer in the municipality is the logistics company Dima Service AG, founded in 1973 and headquartered in Schönenbuch, which employs over 100 people in its branches.
traffic
Schönenbuch is connected to the city of Basel by bus route 33 operated by Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) via Allschwil . Roads lead to Allschwil and Neuwiller in France .
