history

The history of Ettingen goes back to the year 10,000 BC. BC, when Ice Age people stayed in Büttenenloch and later Neolithic clans settled (4,500 to 1,800 BC).

The current village of Ettingen was built in the 5th or 6th century along a stream, the Dorfbach, which now runs hidden under the Dorfstrasse. It was divided into three courtyards, the Oberhof, the Mittel- or Pfandhof, and the Niederhof. The leader of the Alemannic clan who built these farms, Etto or Atto, gave the village its name.

The village of Ettingen belonged to the Principality of Basel until it was dissolved. The prince-bishop temporarily granted high jurisdiction to the Counts of Thierstein , the lower to the Reichenau Monastery (Lake Constance), from whose coat of arms Ettingen has taken the red cross. Goods and people belonged to various monasteries in the city of Basel, among others. At the Congress of Vienna in 1815 Ettingen was given to the canton of Basel and broke up in 1833 at the Basel canton separation from her and went to the half-canton of Basel-Country over.

coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into two blue and two white areas. In the upper right, white corner there is a continuous red cross. This reminds of the former affiliation to the Reichenau monastery . The division into blue and white quarter areas comes from the coat of arms of the Fürstenstein family, who lived in a castle above the village (but not legally / politically connected to it).
