The Leimental or Leymental - also called Birsigtal in the lower part - extends from the Jura along the Birsig and the Blauen and Bruderholz ridge to the city of Basel . The name is derived from the term clay and refers to the clay-containing subsoil.
The catchment area of the Leimental comprises the 17 villages:
- Wolschwiller , Biederthal , Liebenswiller and Leymen in the French region of Alsace
- Metzerlen , Rodersdorf , Mariastein , Hofstetten-Flüh , Witterswil and Bättwil in the Swiss canton of Solothurn
- Burg im Leimental , Biel-Benken , Ettingen , Therwil , Oberwil , Bottmingen and Binningen in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft
