The Blauen is a wooded ridge in north-western Switzerland and is located in the cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn .
The blue runs in an east-west direction and reaches a height of 837 m above sea level. M. The ridge of its westernmost part forms a natural border between Switzerland and France . The Blue ridge is part of the Jura Mountains and is the watershed between Birstal and Birsigtal .
The blue area is made up of light limestone and blue-gray clay , which lie alternately on top of each other in layers (rock banks ). The rocks contain many fossils of marine animals such as mussels , snails , ammonites , belemnites , corals , sea urchins and much more. As the fossils prove, these are deposits in the solidified sea mud of the Jurassic Sea, which was once located here . Since the limestone is hard, it crumbles through the weathering on the surface and gives poor arable soil. That is why the blue is largely forested.
Two mountains in the nearby Black Forest, the Blauen near Badenweiler and the Zeller Blauen , also bear the name Blauen .
