After that, an exponential growth set in, which led to a quadrupling of the population within 35 years (1990 only 545 inhabitants were counted). Today the settlement and industrial area of Bättwil has grown together almost completely with those of Witterswil and Flüh.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Bättwil was a village dominated by agriculture . Today arable farming , fruit growing (mainly cherry trees) and cattle breeding only play a minor role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Since the 1970s, various companies in the construction and transport industry, machine and apparatus engineering and a metal goods factory have set up shop in Bättwil. The community has been the location of the Leimental District School since 1975. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employees are therefore commuters who work mainly in the Basel region.

history
Finds from Roman times indicate that the Romans were already present in the municipality of Bättwil; however, no actual traces of settlement were discovered. Due to the name ending -wil (derived from the Latin villa , villare ) it is assumed that the area was settled by the Alemanni in the 5th century . The first documentary mention was made in 1244 under the name Betwilre . Later the names Bethwilr (1290) and Bettwil (1520) appeared. The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Betto and therefore means in the courtyards of Betto .
In the Middle Ages, Bättwil was under the Reichenau monastery . Later the high jurisdiction lay with the Bishop of Basel , while the lower jurisdiction was exercised by the Counts of Thierstein. In 1522, Solothurn claimed, among other things, two thirds of the local rule from the Thiersteiner inheritance and five years later acquired the remaining third. Bättwil was subsequently assigned to the Dorneck bailiwick and the Leimental district court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village belonged to the Dornach district during the Helvetic Republic and to the Dorneck district from 1803. At the end of the 20th century, the renewed idea of a merger of Bättwil with the neighboring municipality of Witterswil came up, but this was not pursued at this point in time. The merger with the neighboring municipality of Witterswil has been specifically examined since summer 2014. Commissions were formed with Witterswil to examine the effects of a possible merger of the two communities.
Attractions
The chapel of St. Martin (until 1791 Herz-Jesu-Kapelle) was built between 1744 and 1755. Together with Witterswil, Bättwil has been an independent double parish since 1808. The Bättwil mill dates from the 15th century; it was rebuilt in its original form after a fire in 1976. Along the main street are the parish hall (from around 1600) and the old post office (around 1730) as well as a number of characteristic farmhouses from the 16th and 17th centuries.
