history

The community used to consist of the two Alemannic settlements Biel (Benken minor) and Benken (Benken maior, also Benchon) and were owned by the Basel knight family of Schaler since the 13th century. In 1526 they were sold to the city of Basel . After the Reformation in 1529, Biel and Benken merged into a single parish and a new church was built in Benken in 1621 instead of the two village chapels. In the Thirty Years' War , the two villages fared no better than almost all the surrounding communities, they were looted and set on fire. When the French Revolution broke out , the village was a place of refuge for the Jews from the neighboring Sundgau .

On January 1, 1972, the two communities Biel and Benken merged and have been a political municipality ever since.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Biel-Benken has five silver alarm clocks on a red background . This was also the former coat of arms of Benken and the family coat of arms of the Schaler family. Biel had the same coat of arms until 1971, but with reversed colors.
