Uli W. Steinlin

Uli Werner Steinlin (born February 11, 1927 in Schaffhausen ; † December 7, 2015 ) was a Swiss astronomer and university professor .

Live and act

Steinlin studied from 1950 to 1954 at the University of Basel . From 1953 he worked as an assistant or research assistant at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Basel. In 1954 he received his doctorate in astronomy in Basel . From 1956 to 1958 Steinlin held an assistant position at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1961 to 1962 he was a scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

1962 Steinlin pleaded in his polemic College where? for university reform . He claimed that the performance of Swiss universities had deteriorated, and attributed this to an outdated hierarchical organization . Steinlin pleaded for a restructuring based on the American model. The introduction of departments and teamwork should strengthen cooperation between the institutes, streamline administration and reduce hierarchies. Steinlin also pointed out the precarious situation of Swiss private lecturers .

1965 Steinlin was at the University of Basel habilitation . He then took on teaching and research assignments at the University of Geneva and at the Kitt Peak National Observatory. In 1968 the University of Basel appointed him associate professor for astronomy. In 1992 he retired .

Steinlin was the initiator and from 1969 to 1975 the first president of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy. From 1975 to 1982 he was a delegate to the central board of the Swiss Natural Research Society .

Steinlin was married, had children and lived in Biel-Benken .
