Hans von Flachslanden also Hans von Flachsland or Hans the Younger von Flachslanden (* 1412 ; † 1476 in Rötteln near Lörrach , authorized to reside in Basel ) was mayor of Basel from 1454 to 1463.

Life

The family comes from Flaxlanden in Upper Alsace . His parents were Hans the Elder from Flachslanden and Anna Marschalkin von Delsberg. The father was an episcopal arch chamberlain on Landskron in Alsace. In the first marriage von Flachslanden was married to Susanna Tribock, in the second marriage to Barbara von Breitenlandenberg .

From 1444 Meier zu Biel (today Biel-Benken ) was von Flachslanden . From 1451 to 1454 he worked in Basel as councilor of the knights, 1452/53 he was Siebner with competence in the field of finances. From 1454 to 1463 Hans von Flachslanden was mayor of the city of Basel. In the period from 1451 to 1468 he undertook numerous embassies to the empire and to the pope. In 1460 he played a key role in the founding of the University of Basel by Pope Pius II . When Hans von Flachslanden finally resigned as mayor in 1463, he also resigned his citizenship in Basel and became bailiff of Margrave Rudolf IV von Hachberg-Sausenberg in Rötteln. In 1468 he was one of the mediators of the Waldshut direction with which the Waldshut War ended. As an extremely wealthy and therefore influential man, Hans von Flachslanden was one of the most important politicians in Basel of his time.

Art history

The most famous legacy is the so-called Flachsland carpet , which Hans von Flachslanden gave to his second wife Barbara von Breitenlandenberg for their wedding in 1468. The carpet has been in the Basel Historical Museum since 1981 , which it bought for CHF 2.6 million.

In addition, the so-called Ringelhof at Petersgraben 23 in Basel represented part of the possessions of Hans von Flachslanden.
