Samuel Preiswerk (born September 19, 1799 in Rümlingen , † January 13, 1871 in Basel ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian , pastor and hymn poet .

Life

Preiswerk studied in Basel and Erlangen . During his studies he became a member of the Erlangen fraternity in the winter semester of 1821/22 . In 1822 he took over a vicariate in Biel-Benken . Two years later he became a pastor in an orphanage and in 1828 a teacher in a mission house . During this time he was already writing some hymns that later made him internationally known. In 1830 he became a pastor in Muttenz . The office was soon withdrawn from him because he refused to say pro- revolutionary prayers . He became a teacher at the Theological School of the Evangelical Society in Geneva in 1834. There his Hebrew grammar appeared , written in French , which had four editions. Because he did not want to give up contact with representatives of Irvingianism , he left the society in 1837. He moved to Basel and became a lecturer in Hebrew language and literature in 1839 and pastor of the Leonhard Church in 1840 . From 1859 he was pastor of the Münster parish, where he became Antistes , head of the municipal church and school system. In Basel he published the magazine Das Morgenland from 1838 to 1843 . Old and new for friends of the Holy Scriptures . In 1860, the University of Basel made him an honorary doctorate in theology.
