The Basel luxury hotel Les Trois Rois , formerly the Hotel Drei Könige , is one of the oldest hotels in Switzerland. It is located directly on the Rhine and the Middle Rhine Bridge . It is a five star hotel as well as one of the Leading Hotels of the World .

history

In 1681 the house was mentioned for the first time as the "Herrenherberge und Gasthof zu den three Kings". The current main building was built in 1844 in the classicism style based on plans by the architect Amadeus Merian . In 1911, the head building on the ship landing was extended according to the lines and shapes of the Belle Époque . In the following 160 years the hotel was rebuilt again and again.

In 2004, Thomas Straumann, a major industrialist ( Straumann Holding AG ), bought the Trois Rois from the Richemont Group and had it restored to its condition from 1844. Instead of being gutted , the building was removed layer by layer; one came across paintings in the entrance area and the original wallpapers, which were restored. The hotel reopened on March 20, 2006 and has been operating under the name Les Trois Rois ever since .

Theodor Herzl in 1901 on the hotel balcony

In the four hundred year history of the hotel, Voltaire , Napoleon Bonaparte , Queen Elizabeth II , Pablo Picasso , Thomas Mann and many other celebrities from all over the world have been regular guests here. In addition, Theodor Herzl's most famous photo was taken in 1901 during the Fifth  Zionist Congress on the hotel's balcony. In November 1912 the delegates of the International Socialist Congress worked out their peace manifesto there.
