Amadeus Merian

Amadeus Merian (born May 12, 1808 in Basel ; † January 11, 1889 there ) was a Swiss architect .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a stone carver in Pforzheim , Merian studied architecture with Friedrich von Gärtner at the Bauakademie in Munich . For 24 years, from 1835 to 1859, he was a building inspector in Basel and, together with Christoph Riggenbach , headed the work on the Basel Minster , a task that was carried out along with the renovations and further construction of other churches in Germany, such as the Strasbourg Minster and Cologne , which were also pending at the time Doms , triggered a lively debate on the protection of historical monuments. In 1842 he restored the row gate . After Ludwig Calame had replaced him as building inspector, he was a member of the city's small council from 1860 to 1876 . His posthumously published memories are "an invaluable source for the background of public construction".

With the Café Spitz in the old town of Kleinbasel , he created his first new building from 1838–1840. According to Merian's plans , conversions for police use were made in the Lohnhof from the 1830s to the 1850s. He designed buildings in the Munich arched style, including the new building of the Hotel Drei Könige from 1844 . Under his leadership, the Theodorskirche (1836), the Peterskirche (1836–37), the Leonhardskirche with the Lohnhof, the Basel Minster (1836–1857), the parish church Kleinhüningen (1847), the Middle Rhine Bridge (1838–1857 ) were built under his leadership. 1840) and the Clarakirche (1858–59).
