Theodorskirche in Basel

The Theodorskirche is an Evangelical Reformed church in the city of Basel . The Gothic church is in Wettstein - Quarter and the St. Theodore consecrated.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1084 . At the beginning of the 12th century it belonged to the monastery of St. Alban . It is located upriver from today Kleinbasel in the later abandoned village Lower Basel , which at that time canonically the diocese of Constance , constitutionally , however, already for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Basel belonged. 8th century graves were found inside the church in 1947. Outside the church, burial sites from the 11th century were discovered in 1984 and 1993. With the construction of the Rhine bridge in 1225, part of the community moved down the Rhine, closer to the bridge. So the community now lacked a number of churchgoers and, above all, their church taxes . As a financial compensation, the St. Niklaus daughter chapel was built near the Rhine bridge in 1255 . For the first time, St. Theodor could be identified as the patron saint of the mother church.

Large parts of this church were badly damaged in the Basel earthquake in 1356. Reports from 1402 state the extent of the destruction as follows: [The church was] shaken, overturned, and out of shape. Both church towers partially collapsed, the altar was also badly damaged. Only the north tower was rebuilt later. On February 8, 1403, Bishop Marquard von Randegg gave his consent to the foundation of a Carthusian monastery in Basel and gave the Carthusian monastery the name St. Margarethental .

In 1984, a skeleton known as Theo the pipe smoker was excavated in a former poor cemetery next to the church .

organ

In 1770 Johann Andreas Silbermann built an organ to replace a work by Johann Friedrich Macrander ; this was sold to Saint-Imier in 1916 ; its housing is now in Basel's St. Peter's Church . A competition was announced in 1917 for a new organ case.

The current instrument was built in 1983 by the organ builders Alfred and Daniel Kern (Strasbourg) . It has 37 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The actions are mechanical.
