St. Christophorus (Basel)
The St. Christophorus Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Swiss city of Basel . It is located in today's Kleinhüningen district .
prehistory
The incorporation of Kleinhüningen into the city of Basel and the associated industrialization as well as the construction of the port facility made it necessary to build a Catholic church in addition to the Evangelical Reformed parish church. In 1935 the foundation stone for the Christophoruskirche was laid and in 1936 it was inaugurated. The old church was demolished in 2018.
Chronicle of the church building and the community
Saint Christopher , to whom the church is dedicated, is represented with a baroque statue on a mosaic with around 9000 stones and a glass window. The interior has been rebuilt several times. Most of the churchgoers were initially shipmen. Therefore, from 1948 onwards, a Dutch skipper chaplain was employed as a pastor . In 1960 the Christophorus congregation received its own parish through an episcopal decree . In 1974 a large anchor was set up as a souvenir. In 1976 an organ was installed. Since 2000, the parishes of St. Joseph in the Matthäus - Quartier and St. Christophorus have been a single parish .
