Johanneskirche (Basel)

Johanneskirche

The Johanneskirche (also called Quartiergemeinde St. Johannes ) is an Evangelical Reformed church in the city of Basel . It is located in the Kannenfeld quarter in the St.Johann district. The church was placed under monument protection in 1996.

In 1936, as winners of a competition , Karl Egender and Ernst Friedrich Burckhardt built the then highly modern St. John's Church (after St. John ) with a parish wing and parsonage . The elongated rectangular structure of the church wing with flat roof is oriented towards Kannenfeldplatz , but is set back on the area and thus creates a break between the churchyard and the somewhat lower-lying residential area .

The architecture of the Johanneskirche follows the clear guidelines of its construction time. The architectural language of " New Objectivity " with concrete , visible steel girders and glass blocks characterizes the church building and its design in its purely technical form. The bell tower , which provides a three-sided view and, as a purely functional element, sets the decisive accent in the building, is particularly striking . Inside, the list of demonstrating organ pipes and the forward located the organ console and the black folding chairs the interior design zeitgeist of the 1930s.

The Johanneskirche with the associated parish wing enables a variety of uses then as now, parallel to church operations.

Bells
