Geoffrey M. "Geoff" Sanderson (born February 1, 1972 in Hay River , Northwest Territories ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger played over 1,100 games for eight teams in the National Hockey League between 1991 and 2008 . Most of this time he spent with the Hartford Whalers , who had selected him in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft in 36th position, as well as the Columbus Blue Jackets and Buffalo Sabers . With the Canadian national team he won the gold medal at the world championships in 1994 and 1997 .

Career

Sanderson played for the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League during his junior years . In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round as 36th by the Hartford Whalers .

At the end of the 1990/91 season he made two appearances in the NHL and scored his first goal. In the coming season he made his breakthrough as a regular player. In the 1992/93 season he was the top scorer of the Whalers with 89 points. When the NHL started late in the 1994/95 season due to a strike , he kept fit in Finland at HPK Hameenlinna until then . When the Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes , he moved with them, but during the season he and Sean Burke were given to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Kirk McLean and Martin Gélinas . After a month he switched to the Buffalo Sabers .

He stayed in Buffalo for two more seasons before he was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft . At the end of his fourth season in Columbus, he was released again to Vancouver. The strike 2004/05 season he spent with the HC Servette Genève in the Swiss National League A .

The 2005/06 season he started again with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but after two games he moved to the Phoenix Coyotes . In the 2006/07 season he was active for the Philadelphia Flyers . In the summer of 2007 he was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers , but his one-year contract was not renewed at the beginning of the 2008/09 season. Then Sanderson ended his active career in which he had completed 1104 NHL games and recorded 700 scorer points.

In the 2010/12 and 2011/12 seasons, the Canadian was in the coaching team of the New York Islanders , but did not pursue this career further.

International

At the international level, Sanderson took part with the Canadian national team at the World Championships in 1993 , 1994 and 1997 and won two gold medals with the team after finishing fourth.
