The Heuwaage Viaduct is one of the three large city viaducts in Basel . It is located on the Grossbasler side and crosses the Birsig , which flows underground, as well as the earlier systems and trenches of the Steinentor and Steinenschanze . It separates the districts of Am Ring and the suburbs .
The name comes from the Heuwaage, which was moved here from Barfüsserplatz in 1901 when the Waghaus was built. In 1959 it was demolished again. Before that, the space created after the stone gate was demolished in 1866 was used for the pig market until 1885.
The viaduct was planned for the first time as early as 1889, but construction did not begin until decades later in 1966 and was completed in 1970. Initially, the Heuwaage Viaduct was praised by urban planning, but was considered to be in danger of collapsing in the event of a moderate earthquake due to its economical construction. In the course of extensive repairs, the viaduct was renovated in 2009/2010.
