The Peter Merian bridge in Basel connects the Gundeldingen district with the city center by crossing the eastern apron of the Basel SBB train station at the level of the Basel 2 post office. Originally there was an underpass at this point, but when it rained it was often full of water, which is why it was replaced by a bridge in 1901. It was named after the Basel naturalist Peter Merian .

The bridge is owned by the SBB . Today it leads along the red-brown building of post office 2, which was newly built in the 1970s and which is also built over the tracks.

Since 2001, tram lines 10 and 11 of the Basel tram have also passed under the bridge. The newly created tram route leads from the Centralbahnplatz in front of the Basel train station under the Basel post office 2 and the Peter-Merian Bridge, and then over the Euroville Tram Bridge to the Münchensteiner Bridge .

Today the Peter Merian Bridge no longer meets the requirements - neither those of the SBB nor those of the city for private transport. The clearance profile under the bridge is not high enough so that the trains can only pass under the bridge at reduced speed, and it also hinders the construction of additional tracks. On the Gundeldingen side, the connection for road traffic is unfavorable because the vehicles come to a T-junction at the end of the bridge, which hinders the flow of traffic.
