The Estátua de Viana is a fountain in the Portuguese district town of Viana do Castelo . It is located in the center of a park on the banks of the Lima .

history

The Rococo- style fountain , commissioned by the Conde de Bobadela in 1774, was intended to commemorate the glory days of the city's already in decline, merchant shipping.

In the center of the fountain, on a pedestal, is Viana, the symbolic female figure of the city, in a flowing robe and crowned with a castle. Like a queen of the seas, she holds a scepter in her right hand and a caravel in her left .

It is surrounded by four busts. They symbolize the continents that the ships from Viana had reached.
