The Johanniterbrücke is the third oldest Rhine bridge in the Swiss city of Basel .
First bridge
A referendum in June 1877 decided to build a third, the lower Rhine bridge. The iron bridge was built within two years and opened on July 15, 1882. It was not as high as the upper Rhine crossing at the Harzgraben, the Wettstein Bridge , but it made a nice impression on the audience.
The bridge was 225.32 meters long, 12.60 meters wide and was supported by four sturdy stone pillars made of Laufen limestone . An elegant railing and the lantern bearers completed the decoration of the imposing bridge.
From 1924 the Johanniterbrücke also carried a double-track tram .
Second bridge
In 1964, the Grand Council decided to rebuild the Johanniterbrücke. Between 1965 and 1967 the prestressed concrete girder bridge was rebuilt to the left and right of the old bridge and then, after the old bridge was demolished, pushed onto the two new river piers. It was the first major bridge in Switzerland, in the cantilever was built. The main opening has a span of 137.3 meters. There is no longer any tram traffic over the new bridge, but between 1968 and 2004 the overhead lines of the Basel trolleybus crossed the bridge.
