The trolleybus Basel was the trolleybus system of the Swiss city of Basel . The Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB), known as Basler Strassenbahnen ( BStB ) until 1946 , operated it between 1941 and 2008 as a supplement to the Basler Tram and the city bus lines. At times three lines operated , two of which led to the neighboring municipality of Riehen to the north .

history

The individual sections of the Basel trolleybus network went into operation as follows:

July 31, 1941 Claraplatz – Rosengartenweg– Friedhof am Hörnli Line A, from 1948 line 31 Replacement for bus line A
October 25, 1948 Cemetery at the Hörnli – Habermatten Line 31 New development
February 9, 1956 Rosengartenweg – Käferholzstrasse Line 34 Replacement for bus route 34
October 24, 1968 Wanderstrasse - Badischer Bahnhof Line 33 Replacement for bus route 33,
until 4th July 1966 tram route 2
April 18, 1973 Käferholzstrasse – Habermatten Line 34 New development

The vehicles were parked in the Rankstrasse garage on line 31, and this was also linked to line 33 via an operating line from the Badischer Bahnhof station . After line 34 was switched to bus service on September 9, 2000 and line 33 on December 13, 2004, the last trolleybus also ran on the 4.9 km long line 31 on June 30, 2008. This was preceded by a popular initiative to save the trolleybus, which, however, was rejected by the voters on June 17, 2007 with 27,403 votes to 23,645 (53.7 percent). All 3 lines were later significantly extended (line 31 to Bachgraben, line 33 to Schönenbuch, line 34 to Bottmingen).
