The Birsfelden power plant is a Swiss public limited company based in Birsfelden in the canton of Basel-Landschaft . The purpose of the company is to use the hydropower of the Rhine by creating and operating the Birsfelden power station . The low-pressure run-of-river power plant delivers an average output of around 100 MW .
History and construction
Since the end of the 19th century, various groups of entrepreneurs have been planning a power plant. But it was not until 1942 that Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, between the banks of which the dam was supposed to be located, submitted their plans to the responsible Swiss and Baden authorities. It took another eight years until the project was granted the concession and the power plant company was founded on September 16, 1950. A month earlier, the Basel-Sternenfeld airfield had been shut down and had to give way to the construction of the power plant.
In 1951, the client commissioned the architect Hans Hofmann and the city gardener R. Arioli with the high-rise buildings and the landscaping. The power plant had to undertake to guarantee ship operation between Basel and Augst at all times and built the necessary shipping facilities (locks).
Locks
The power plant is equipped with two locks, 180 meters or 190 meters long and 12 meters wide, for navigation on the Rhine.

The footpath with the name Holzapfelweg over the weir and over the locks of the power plant is the uppermost bridge or Rhine crossing of the city of Basel. Because of the large meadow in the center of the island and the proximity to Birsköpfli , the power plant island also serves as a local recreation area.
