The Gerstheim power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Rhine in France . It is located in the municipality of Gerstheim in the Bas-Rhin department . Schwanau is on the German side . In contrast to the four power plants along the Rhine canal , the water for the power plant is only diverted from the Rhine over a length of about 6 kilometers (so-called loop solution). For shipping, a lock with two lock chambers was built in the power station canal parallel to the power station . Directly at the power plant, a road crosses the canal, which leads south on the island created during the construction of the canal, in order to cross the border to Germany at the weir at the canal exit.
In the Versailles Treaty in 1919, France was granted the sole right to develop the Rhine as a border river between Germany and France. The power plant, which went into operation in 1967, is part of Électricité de France .
