The Marckolsheim power plant is a run-of-river power plant on the Rhine in France . It is located near Marckolsheim in the Bas-Rhin department . On the German side are the towns of Wyhl and Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl (mountains) .
In contrast to the four hydropower plants along the Rhine canal , the inlet for a length of around eight kilometers is branched off from the Rhine ("loop solution"). A lock with two lock chambers was built parallel to the power plant in the power plant canal for shipping . The connecting road between Marckolsheim and Wyhl or Sasbach crosses the canal directly at the power plant.
In the Versailles Treaty of 1919 , France received the sole right to develop the Rhine as a border river between Germany and France. The power plant, which went into operation in 1961, is owned by Électricité de France (EdF).
