history

Until the 18th century

Already from the time around 50 BC. There are traces of a Celto-Roman settlement. The structure of the community used to be mainly characterized by agriculture. Later cigar factories played a bigger role.

The place, which belongs to Vorderösterreich, was largely destroyed in a fire on March 7, 1751. The 63-year-old farmer Anna Trutt was held responsible for this and was charged with devil pact and arson in Endingen, convicted as a witch and burned at the stake after being strangled. The local authorities hushed up the case from the government in Vienna, as witch trials were forbidden in Austria at that time.

Wyhl nuclear power plant

Wyhl became known nationwide in the 1970s through the dispute over the construction of the Wyhl nuclear power plant ; the conflict in Wyhl is considered to be a turning point in the German anti-nuclear movement . After the originally planned location in Breisach, which had been planned since 1969, was given up due to protests, in July 1973 Wyhl was named as the location for a power station on the Kaiserstuhl . As a result, numerous citizens' initiatives came into being , which in 1974 merged to form an international committee. Demonstrations (rallies from the border triangle) and squares took place. The project was discontinued after a while: In the judgment of the Administrative Court of Freiburg in 1977, it was still assumed that it would be safe, but the building was described as politically unenforceable at the moment . However, this judgment was overturned by the Administrative Court of Mannheim in 1982.

coat of arms

Blazon : “In a split shield; in front a golden ploughshare overturned in red, behind in blue a silver scythe iron placed on a pole. "

The oldest verifiable court seal from Wyhl and Wöllingen, which passed away in the 18th century, on a document from 1609 already shows the ploughshare, but turned downwards, and the scythe iron. Since the seal, which was documented in the second half of the 18th century, all stamps have shown the coat of arms in the form that is still used today. Only the municipal coat of arms in the lintel of the mill, dated 1840, shows the coat of arms fields reversed. In 1905, when the seal was redrawn by the Generallandesarchiv, the colors of the coat of arms were also determined, with the tinging of the rear field corresponding to that of the coat of arms of the city of Endingen. Since 1413 the local rule was an Austrian pledge and later a fief in whole or in part with the city. The colors in the front field can be seen as the Baden colors.

The flag is striped yellow and red.

Myths and legends

Baron Kritzli

The “Baroner Kritzli” in Wyhl

The story of a tragic hunting accident:

Hunting in the Rhine Forest used to be very popular because of the abundance of game. In the 19th century the nobility of the Kaiserstuhl used to hunt here. The Lords of Girardi were the hunting masters in the summer and also popular hosts for the hunting gentlemen in the neighborhood. Such a hunt is said to have led to a tragic accident that ultimately led to the creation of the “Baroner Kritzli”.

The following has happened:

The gentlemen of Girardi had invited the nobles of the neighborhood to hunt. Among these guests there is said to have been a young "gentleman" with his stepfather, between whom there was a secret grudge, as it usually happens when the mother is still free with older children.

On July 14, 1873, the gentlemen set out to hunt. Nobody thought of anything bad on this wonderful day and it started with Hussa and Jagdhornschall. Shots rang out and every sow was celebrated with Halali.

But one of the stepfathers had a difficult time, whenever he thought he was going to kill a handsome boar, it slipped away from him. The rest of the hunting party could only hear him from a distance that evening. Then he heard a crack and break and an angry grunt that seemed to be coming closer and closer to him. Now was the time! Between the bush and the trunk he saw something stained and gray and his quick, aimed shot cracked.

But to his horror, instead of the groan of a hit boar, he heard a human wail! He hurried to the launch site and found instead of the boar his own stepson, hit by his bullet, dying on the ground.

To commemorate that tragic accident, the rulers erected the popularly known "Baroner Kritzli" on the spot where the young baron breathed his life. On the cross are the warning words:

"Watch, watch and pray because you do not know when it is time"

On December 18, 1909, the cross, which had been damaged by young people, was screwed back together by the blacksmith Wilhelm Fränzle, as indicated by the inscription on the back. It was later stolen. Then a wrought-iron cross, which corresponded to the style of the earlier shape, was made by the local nature conservationist Meinrad Schwörer and re-erected on March 19, 1956 at the same location. And again the cross was stolen and re-manufactured around 1983 by master locksmith Manfred Burkart. The damaged stone plinth was restored by the bricklayer Werner Öschger. And so the Baroner Kritzli is still a popular destination for the Wyhl population today.
