history

Around 1864, burial mounds from the First Iron Age between 1000 and 500 BC were found in a forest. BC, which indicate a very early settlement. A deed of donation from Emperor Heinrich II from 1016 in which Malterdingen is mentioned for the first time is now considered a forgery, even if the exchange of territory of June 6, 1004 mentioned therein is correct. In 1297 Count Heinrich von Veringen and his brothers Manegold and Vollrad the Younger sold their possessions and rights to Malterdingen to the brothers Heinrich and Rudolf von Hochberg for 60  silver marks . In the Middle Ages, the place was one of the successful municipalities of the margraviate of Baden-Hachberg and achieved relatively great economic importance. 1418 the place of Margrave got Bernhard I. the market right conferred. Malterdingen also had the salt law and the law of "Metzig". The salt fountain near the town hall takes its name from this. Numerous renovated buildings from the Middle Ages still characterize the closed development in the old town center.

Viticulture in Malterdingen was significantly influenced by Cistercian monks who owned land in Malterdingen as early as the 13th century and ran an estate. The area in which part of the Bernhard Huber winery is known to experts is still called Mönchhofmatten today.
