Radical 180 with the meaning " tone , sound " is one of eleven of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with nine strokes.
With 6 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
Radikal Laut only occupies the 180th position in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 211th position.
音 is a radical that is itself a compound sign ( radical 160辛 plus radical 73曰). Its seal form is very similar to that of 言 (yan = word, radical 149 ), except that in the mouth 口 ( radical 30 ) a small horizontal line is added at the bottom. Both forms, 言 (yan) and 音 (yin) were used as bronze characters in the same sense. The upper component of 音 (yan), 立 is the remainder of 辛 and not the sign 立 (li = stand). At the bottom there is not the sun 日 (ri), but a mouth 口 (kou) with a line in it, which symbolizes that this mouth is making a sound ( radical 73曰).
As a bearer of meaning in the composite sign, 音 places this in the context of music and euphony such as 竟 (= complete), which actually denoted the end of a piece of music. 章 (= chapter) was originally the end of a musical sentence. 韵 (= melodious sound), 意 (= meaning) contain 音. 意 (= meaning) contains 音 and the heart 心, is therefore a combined sign.
音 (yin) also appears as a carrier of the sound, for example in 窨 (= basement, with 穴 xue, radical 116 as a carrier of meaning). In 喑 (= silent) the radical 音 is both a sound and a carrier of meaning.
When looking up unknown characters it is easy to make the mistake of looking for 音 characters under 立 ( radical 117 ). Many dictionaries take this into account by, for example, sorting 章 (zhang = chapter) under 立 or 意 (= meaning) under 心 (= heart, radical 61 ).
