With 10 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical "board" accepts only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the 91st position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 114th position.

The seal script shape shows a vertically divided tree, the right half of which gives the sign its meaning. In China, wooden chips used to be used as a material for writing on. Many ancient scriptures that have been excavated consist of bamboo tubes split lengthways, on the outside of which the texts were written from top to bottom. 片 (pian) therefore places its characters in the context of the printing plate and the writing medium, for example in 牌 (pai = shield, also in 招牌 zhaopai = sign), 牒 (the = certificates), 牍 (= wooden writing tablet) and 版本 ( banben = edition of a book).
