Radical "bean" takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 151. position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 191st position.
The pictogram with the cup-like vessel was probably created from the idea of a pea or bean pod with a tripod under it.
As a bearer of meaning, appears in the following characters: 豇 (in: 豇豆 = cowpea), 豌 (in: 豌豆 = pea), 豉 (豆豉 boiled and salted soybeans used as a spice).
登 (= to climb up) is originally a sacrificial vessel. The seal mark consists of meat (肉, or 月) above and below 豆, but here in its original sense as a bowl on high legs. There are two hands underneath. So the hands lift up the bowl with the offering.
豆 also appears as a sound carrier, for example in 痘 (= smallpox), 逗 (= tease) and in 短 (= short).
The number one (一 yi) is capitalized 壹 on checks as a sum of money. However, this symbol originally consisted of 壶 (hu = jug) and 吉 (ji) as sound carriers. The bean 豆 (dou) only performs a general function in 壹.
