The radical "Kauri" takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the 154th position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 106th position as the abbreviation (贝).
In prehistoric China were Kaurischneckenhäuser as money used ( cowrie money ). During the Shang dynasty , bronze money came into circulation for the first time, which was still minted in the form of snail shells. It is therefore understandable that cowrie shells symbolize wealth. The pictogram traces the tanks and antennae of these animals.
The radical 貝 (贝 bei) places its characters in the meaning fields of money and trade such as in (gou = buy), 贵 (gui = valuable), 贷 (dai = credit), 贿 (= bribe), 赂 (in : 贿赂 = bribe), 货 (huo = goods), 资 (zi = capital), 赈 (zhen = materially support) and 赃 (zang = stolen goods).
The two snail shells 贝 above in the symbol 婴 (= baby) are derived from the old custom of hanging two snail shells around girls' necks as a chain. Two 贝 (at) next to each other were pronounced, so that this component in 婴 (= infant) carries the sound and the meaning. In the sign 赖 (lai = leaning on someone) the left component 刺 (lai) functions as a sound and the right 贝 (at) as a bearer of meaning. Its original meaning is "to win". The components of 败 (bai = defeat) are the snail shell 贝 (at) and 攴 (pu, radical 66 ), the hand with the stick that smashes the snail shell = loss.
The sign 贼 (zei = thief) consists of the snail shell 贝 (at), the hand (bottom center) and the cutting ax 戈 = hand destroys the snail shell with the ax, which corresponds to the first meaning of the sign: damage. Only later did its importance change to today's thief.
Occasionally, 贝 (at) appears as a sound carrier as in 狈 (at in: 狼狈 = sitting in a tight spot) or 钡 (at = element barium ). In the shortened character 坝 (ba = dam), 贝 (at) only functions as a general component that replaces the original, more complicated one.
Spelling variant of the radical ( abbreviation ): 贝. With 貝 character combinations from U + 8C9D to 贕 U + 8D1C are coded, then with 贝 from U + 8D1D to 赣 U + 8D63.
Note: 贝 is very similar to the abbreviation for radical 147见.
