Radical 160 , meaning “ bitter ”, is one of 20 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with seven strokes.

With 10 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical only occupies the 160th position in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the new Sino-German dictionary from the People's Republic of China, there is, for example, at the 186th place.

In the past, ohne was written without the lower horizontal bar, with the same meaning. The oracle bone shape represents a double-edged weapon that was primarily used for slave torture, for example to cut off the nose, ears or the face.

The characters 童 (tong = child, but actually male slave) and 妾 (qi = concubine, formerly slave) do not contain 立 (li), but 辛 (xin) as a component of the meaning (and 童 tong including a 重 zhong as the carrier of the sound) .

辛 (xin) has something to do with punishment as in 辜 (= atonement). 辟 (bi = ruler, actually criminal law) consists of the three components 卩 (ji = kneeling person), 口 (kou mouth) and 辛 (xin). The latter two refer to the oral punishment. The addition 大 (da = large) in 大 辟 (dabi) turns the law or the ruler into the death penalty. The phrase 辛苦 (xinku = laborious) is common today. 辛 (xin) is also suffering.

Sometimes 辛 (xin) appears as a sound carrier, for example in 锌 (xin = zinc ), 亲 (qin = blood relative).
