Radical 169 with the meaning " door , gate " is one of nine traditional radicals in Chinese writing with eight lines.
With 61 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it is quite common. There are also 246 characters under this radical in the Kangxi dictionary .
The modern abbreviation门 in the People's Republic of China saves a number of lines when writing, but still allows the original form to be clearly recognized. In this form, however, the door has lost its wings.
It is the pictogram of a door with two door leaves that closed a house. The vertical lines on the right and left represent the door posts. As a component, this radical occurs in symbols such as 闩 (= bolt) or 闸 (= lock).
The most famous gate is the Gate of Heavenly Peace , which leads into Beijing's Forbidden City .
The abbreviation of the radical 169 is 门; with 門 character combinations from U + 9580 to 闧 U + 95E7 are coded, then with 门 from U + 95E8 to 阛 U + 961C.
