Radical 164 , meaning " alcohol ", is one of twenty of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese script that are written with seven strokes.
With 56 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are relatively many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The radical alcohol occupies the 164th position only in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. In modern abbreviation dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 193rd place.
The character developed from the pictorial representation of an amphora with a narrow mouth, thick belly and handle. If you threw this amphora into the water, it filled up and, as soon as it was full, stood up.
The shape of the oracle bones and the seal script show a bottle-shaped vessel filled with wine. Wine, schnapps is the original meaning of 酋. The signs of the radical are therefore in this context: 醇 (= fine wine), 酤 (= buy or sell wine), 酬 (= chou = toast), 醉 (zui = drunk), 醒 (xing = come to your senses ). Alcoholic fermentation 发酵 (fajiao) plays a crucial role in the production of an alcoholic drink. 酱油 (jiangyou = soy sauce) and 醋 (cu = vinegar) are not alcoholic liquids, but the Chinese found their manufacturing process comparable, so they added the symbol Zeichen (you) to convey the meaning. Even a sour taste comes close to that of alcoholic drinks, which is why sour 酸 (suan) is also written with 酋 (you).
The symbol for wine, schnapps 酒 (jiu), was later preceded by the radical 85 , water (氵 shui): so that 酋 (you) functions here as a carrier of both sound and meaning. 酋 (= chief) actually meant long-aged wine (陈酒 chenjiu). The seal character shows the wine bottle, two short lines at the top indicate that the strong scent of the wine is escaping.
