Radical 178 , meaning “tanned leather ”, is one of 11 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with nine strokes.

With 11 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are relatively few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The character developed from the pictorial representation of two people pulling a round object apart. It can be concluded from this that a tanned hide is spreading. In the seal script form, the sign has a foot each at the top and bottom and a circular frame in the middle. Even earlier, four feet could be seen around the circular frame.

Because of its pronunciation white, 韦 was later borrowed for the word leather ( 皮韦 ). In the compound symbol, often functions as a sound carrier as in (= to contradict ), (= to include), (= side portal of an imperial palace), (= avoid doing something as a taboo). As a bearer of meaning, 韦 creates a connection to leather as in (= resistant), (= sword pouch ).
