Radical 214 , meaning " flute ", is the only one of 214 traditional radicals in Chinese script that is written with seventeen strokes.

With 6 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are very few characters found under this radical in the dictionary. And even in the 40,000-character Kangxi dictionary, there are only 21 characters that can be found under this radical.

Radikal 214 represents a pan flute : several bamboo tubes next to each other, the openings in the middle (three mouths) and the symbol "put together" (triangle) at the top. With the radical metal , this symbol is called "key", because the beard of old keys was vaguely reminiscent of bamboo tubes.
