Radical 一 meaning “ one ” is one of six of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that consist of just a single stroke.
The sign looks similar to the Hangul sign ㅡ "eu" .
With 27 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary (number 3016) it is relatively rare. In the Kangxi dictionary there were still 42 characters that could be found under this radical .
The radical 1 as a horizontal line (橫 héng) belongs to the eight principles of the character 永 (永字八法 Yǒngzì Bāfǎ), which are the basis of Chinese calligraphy .
The character developed from the pictorial representation of an outstretched index finger, which is also the reason why it - in contrast to the Roman numeral I - is written horizontally. Other sources derive the character from ancient Chinese calculators.
The basic meaning of the character extends to the meanings "unity, union".
The horizontal line represents the most diverse things. In the sign of rain, the horizontal line above represents the sky. Under the sun it becomes the horizon over which it rises. Inside a double-leaf door, it is the bolt. In the word "heaven" the line includes everything that is above the person.
