The radical 9 , meaning " man " is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals of Chinese characters that are written with two strokes.

With 320 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are many characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon. It was also well represented in the Kangxi dictionary with 794 characters.

The radical man takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the ninth position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 21st and 23rd positions.

As a radical on the left side of a sign, the human 人 takes the form 亻. The radical does not have its own pronunciation. Some dictionaries do not list 亻 in a separate section, but add it 人. The signs ruled by 亻 are also closely related to humans. An example is the character Zeichen (= rest). It contains the person 亻 and the tree 木: A person leans against a tree and rests.

The character “human” in its originally pictographic form emphasizes the special characteristic of humans: their upright gait. At first it showed a person in profile with a recognizable head, hands and feet. Today's sign reduces him to his front view, with his legs apart.

The radical sign looks similar to the Hangul sign ㅅ "sios" .

The spelling variant 亻 is always on the left, this symbol is similar to the katakana symbol イ  "i".
