It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 146th position.

The character developed from the pictorial representation of a container for food.

The name of the philosopher Mengzi (孟子) is written with the radical 39 (子, "child") above this radical.

In compound characters, 皿 is usually found in the lower position. As a bearer of meaning, it creates the meaning field of vessels such as in

盘 (= tray) and
盅 (= cup).

The seal益 (= profit) shows radical 85 above , water 水, and the bowl 皿 below. Water overflows.

The symbol 盥 (= wash your face or hands) shows the water 水 above the bowl in the middle and one hand washing over a bowl on either side of it.

The symbol 盗 (= to rob) had a component similar to today's 次, which meant "to thirst for something so that water drips out of your mouth". The original sense of 盗 was therefore "to be eager for something".

Sometimes 皿 also appears as a sound carrier, for example in 孟 (= first month of a season).

The bowl 皿 in the sign 盟 (= alliance) was originally the component 血 (= blood, radical 143 ), a liquid that plays a role in alliances.

In 监 (= to monitor), 皿 is also not the bowl, but a remnant of a rare character that also contained the blood 血 as a component. The other component was 卧 (= lie down).
